itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h4>Life Cykel Cost\u00a0 analysis<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">LCC (Life Cycle Cost), or life cycle cost, which is the Swedish term, addresses all costs an object carries with it throughout its lifetime.<\/span> <span title=\"\">An LCC analysis provides an overall economic assessment of the life cycle cost.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The analysis also takes into account that money has a time value and that payments have different value depending on when they occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">The LCC analysis thus takes into account not only the investment cost but also the costs required to keep the object sustainable for its lifetime.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Inspection, operation, maintenance and repair, as well as demolition costs are included (Figure 1).<\/span> <span title=\"\">Many times the current operating and maintenance costs have greater financial consequences than the investment expenditure.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Consequently, the cheapest alternative from the investment cost point of view does not always mean the most cost-effective alternative in a life-cycle perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"_Toc11932350\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc11406474\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc9939476\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc6429501\"><\/a>Life cycle diagram and LCC categories<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">A life cycle diagram shows a schematic of an object&#8217;s life cycle and summarizes all the measures and costs needed to maintain the object&#8217;s function during its planned life cycle.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The costs necessary to keep the item useful, and to give it full function, during its lifetime are called the cost of life cycle measures.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Thus, the LCC of an object included in an LCC analysis includes both investment costs and costs for life cycle measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8508 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Livscykelschema_eng.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"957\" name=\"_Toc11406475\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc9939477\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc6429502\"><\/a>Objectives of LCC analysis<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">The goal of the LCC analysis is to minimize costs with regard to both investment costs and costs for life-cycle measures.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Consequently, the most LCC-efficient item is not always the one that has the lowest cost of life-cycle measures or has the lowest investment cost or has the longest life.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The most LCC-efficient item is the one that has the smallest total annual cost of investment, life cycle costs, and life expectancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"_Toc15033795\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc11406476\"><\/a><a name=\"_Toc9939479\"><\/a>Life span<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">By lifespan in LCC analysis, we mean economic lifespan that refers to the time period from the time the item is put into service until the cost of repair and maintenance measures (required to maintain the object&#8217;s intended function) becomes more expensive than replacing the item with a new one.<\/span> <span title=\"\">To determine how long an object can maintain its intended function, we use the manufacturer&#8217;s specifications.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Note that these apply provided that the manufacturer&#8217;s recommendations for use are complied with and that the object&#8217;s planned service and maintenance measures are implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"_Toc15033796\"><\/a>Methods for comparing costs<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">Money&#8217;s time value is central to LCC analysis as costs included in the analysis must be paid at different times.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In order to compare costs paid at different times, these must be converted to a common time value.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The most common method for comparing past, present and future costs with the present value is called the Net Present Value Method (NPV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">However, costs paid at different times need to take into account the discount rate to reflect the time value of payments.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The present value is thus the calculated value of an investment&#8217;s future cash flow, discounted with respect to a given discount rate (calculation rate).<\/span> <span title=\"\">Net Present Value is the difference between present value and investment cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">The net present value method can be used both to decide whether a certain investment should be made or to compare different investment options.<\/span> <span title=\"\">However, it is only possible to compare alternatives with the same economic life.<\/span> <span title=\"\">If the life span is different, the annuity method is a better method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">The annuity method is closely linked to the present value method, but where the cost is stated per year, the effect of the investment&#8217;s lifetime.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In LCC analysis, we use the annuity method to compare investment alternatives that have different lifetimes and can thus determine the most cost-effective alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Applications of LLC analysis<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='tabcontainer av-av_tab_container-cdfb33d025ccce82e3bec7780d128c1e sidebar_tab sidebar_tab_left height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Bridges<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">Demand for methodologists to analyze and evaluate alternative bridge designs has increased.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The possibility of using LCC models (lifecycle cost models) for bridges has gained increasing interest in recent years, and the use of LCC analysis as one of several basis for decisions has now been accepted by several countries.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The LCC analysis means that alternative bridge designs can already be estimated at an early stage on a lifetime basis.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In this way, not only investment costs are taken into account, but also future costs, e.g.<\/span> <span title=\"\">maintenance and repair costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/en\/hjulstabron\/\">Project Hjulstabron<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7127 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Hjulstabron-300x108.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"108\" road or rail.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The Swedish Transport Administration develops a roadmap for Hjulstabron to enable larger cargo vessels to traffic the fairway on Lake M\u00e4laren.<\/span> <span title=\"\">We have explored several alternatives, and now we have decided to move on with a low bridge, east of the existing one.<\/span> <span title=\"\">But funding is still lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>LCC-analysis<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">In working with the roadmap, we have explored bridge alternatives, for example, to renovate the existing bridge or build a high bridge.<\/span> <span title=\"\">We have also investigated several elevation options for a low bridge east of the existing Hjulstabron.<\/span> <span title=\"\">We have chosen to proceed with a low bridge with a height of seven meters, to the east of the present Hjulstabron.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The new bridge is proposed to have so-called double flaps, that is, there are two parts that open at the bridge opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">Cost estimation, LCC analysis and climate calculation, as well as preparation of the basis calculation according to the successive method have been carried out.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-av_tab-605beb26bf2df6c95d1ebf74be67f568'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" title=\"\">In the coming years, several major investments will be completed and started on railways.<\/span> <span title=\"\">They increase the capacity and opportunities for more, and more punctual, journeys with both regional and long-distance trains.<\/span> <span title=\"\">It provides better opportunities for people to live, study and work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">Worn rail, signal systems and contact lines are replaced throughout the country to make travel and freight transport more reliable.<\/span> <span title=\"\">More money goes to replacing old parts, instead of patching and repairing.<\/span> <span title=\"\">This means that we get a more robust railway and that more trains arrive on time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">The Swedish railway is undergoing a digitalisation.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The foundation is laid with a new European signal system that replaces today&#8217;s obsolete system.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Real-time connectivity makes it easier to run the trains and maintain our railroad.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Security increases and traffic becomes more stable.<\/span> <span title=\"\">In addition, Sweden&#8217;s railway is linked to the rest of the EU.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Development and new technology will open up new opportunities for freight and passenger traffic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/en\/norrbotniabanan\/\">Project Norrbotniabanan<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">The new railway can reduce companies&#8217; transport costs by up to 30 percent.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Such efficiency is not only impacted in the north, but also in the rest of the country as more than half of the heavy freight traffic comes from the north with its destination in the south.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Many of the raw materials transported from the north are processed in other parts of the country to some of our most profitable export products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7689 alignright\" Stambanan route through Upper Norrland&#8217;s many curvy and backward profile, freight transport up here cannot be conducted as efficiently as in other parts of the country.<\/span> <span title=\"\">A new coastal railway between Ume\u00e5-Lule\u00e5 allows for both heavier and longer trains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>LCC-analysis<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">A new single-track railway between Ume\u00e5 and Lule\u00e5, approx.<\/span> <span title=\"\">270km<\/span><span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span title=\"\">D\u00e5va &#8211; Gryssj\u00f6n, approx.<\/span> <span title=\"\">30 km was investigated in the assignment.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Several railway lines were studied, whereby each of them has its location, number and type of construction work.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Cost estimation and life cycle cost comparison have been done for several solutions<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">Cost estimation, LCC analysis and climate calculation, mass management, and preparation of the basis calculation according to the successive method have been carried out.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The calculation is updated continuously according to available drawings \/ spreadsheets.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Alternative difference calculations are performed several times to compare possible solutions for multiple objects throughout the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/section>\n<section class='av_tab_section av_tab_section av-av_tab-a36d3b53898701002363f0a81f7be47b'  itemscope=\"itemscope\" id='tab-id-3-content' class='tab_content' aria-hidden=\"true\"><div class='tab_inner_content invers-color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone title=\"\">The Swedish Transport Administration has overall responsibility for the Swedish road network and also runs the operation and maintenance of roads.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The Swedish Transport Administration&#8217;s goal is to ensure that the transport system is socially economically sound and a sustainable transport system for all users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Road design<\/h4>\n<p>Widening of existing roads with associated other improvements (eg higher load-bearing capacity, railings, geometric improvement, side area, drainage) is a major part of the Swedish Transport Administration&#8217;s investment and reinvestment projects.<\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">It is important to determine at an early stage the level of ambition that will apply to the planning and application of the applicable regulatory requirements.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Some requirements should always apply while other requirements are adapted to conditions and available budget level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">Alternative measures (eg various bodywork alternatives) with associated impact assessments shall be considered.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Based on these, a calculation \/ assessment of investment and maintenance costs (LCC) is made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Consepts<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">It is appropriate to define the intended action before planning.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The definitions below can be a guide.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\"><strong>New construction<\/strong> as a concept implies requirements on road plans and is considered to be met when the standard of action meets all the requirements set out in the design rules (eg width, slope, safety zone) and other technical requirements regarding construction (eg normal bearing capacity for 20 years) and construction (eg<\/span> <span title=\"\">AMA)<\/span><span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span title=\"\">If a measure is taken with or without broadening where all requirements for new construction are met, the measure should be regarded as new construction.<\/span> <span title=\"\">If a form of financing requires this, the same measure can be called improvement, but should then be clearly stated at the planning planning stage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rebuilding<\/strong> as a concept also implies requirements on road plans, but the standard level may be lower than for new construction, eg replacement or extension in an existing structure but not fully according to new building requirements (reconstruction \/ reinvestment \/ &#8220;maintenance&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Narrow width<\/strong> as a concept means that any bearing (bound or unbound as well as bank filling) in the widening structure has a smaller width than 1.7 m (starting from the width of the working tool, for example, roller and shaft)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\"><strong>Improvement<\/strong> as a concept sometimes also involves requirements for roadmaps.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The term is used when the standard for design meets the requirements for just &#8220;improvement&#8221; (eg slope 1: 3, road width> 5.5m with or without width, etc.).<\/span> <span tabindex=\"-1\" title=\"\" contenteditable=\"false\">Based on sustainability, this concept can also be used when requirements are met for &#8220;sustainability improvement \/ maintenance&#8221;.<\/span> <span title=\"\">There are also cases where redistribution is made of lanes within existing width, for example when the roads are designed as bus lanes and other lanes are made narrower (sometimes called &#8220;trimming measures&#8221;).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\"><strong>Reinforcement<\/strong> as a concept is mainly used only when technical requirements are not fully met regarding \u201ccapacity improvement \/ maintenance\u201d and when standard applicable design does not meet the requirements for improvement (eg slope slope steeper than 1: 3, width <5.5 m, etc.)<\/span> <span title=\"\">.<\/span> <span title=\"\">For example, when widening where the slope and \/ or safety zone does not meet the regulatory requirements, it is considered as reinforcement.<\/span> <span title=\"\">If there is no widening but interventions are carried out in road construction, it is also considered as reinforcement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span title=\"\"><strong>Maintenance<\/strong> is measures to restore or maintain the properties of structures, installations and devices to the level intended for previous construction or improvement.<\/span> <span title=\"\">For example, superstructure on existing road construction with only adjustment and new wear bearing and cleaning \/ ditching is considered separation parameter is the service life of the structure&#8217;s bearings and the extent to which existing construction is maintained environment<\/h4>\n<p><span title=\"\">Waste collection from public trash is a resource-intensive effort that faces major challenges.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Municipalities have a recurring problem of littering due to overcrowded trash cans in parks, city centers or sports arenas.<\/span> <span title=\"\">Especially during the summer when people spend time, eat and drink in the parks and leave a lot of packaging from food and drink behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7657 size-featured\" src=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/papperskorgar-citypro-1500x409.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"409\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">To prevent debris from overflowing trash, emptying must be carried out regularly and with increased frequency during the summer months.<\/span> <span title=\"\">It is the municipal units that are responsible for cleaning up the public environment and it is a business that today costs a lot of money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"\">In addition to economic aspects, manual emptying of public trash can adversely affect the local cityscape by obstructing traffic flows, creating noise and contributing to air pollution.<\/span> <span title=\"\">There are also work environment problems linked to waste collection that need to be considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.folkbro.com\/en\/recycle-bins-in-public-environment\/\">LCC analysis of three options regarding waste collection for cost picture for the various alternatives, taking into account different circumstances and conditions.<\/span> <span title=\"\">This gives decision makers a better basis for cost-effective choices, The calculation also includes water and energy costs, as well as cleaning costs, which is usually a large item in the total calculation.<\/p>\n<p>We are looking at both extraction and processing of the raw materials as well as transport, production of the various building materials, operation and maintenance, waste management and the possibility of reuse when the building is to be demolished sometime in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that a life cycle analysis has been carried out for the different building parts may also be a requirement in certain tender procedures. How long does it take for the surplus to be paid from the investment to equal the basic investment?<\/p>\n<p>A more accurate, yet simple method for determining the profitability of an investment is to use the present value method. Since future money is less valuable, future investments are recalculated to a current level. The present value method is necessary if one is to be able to compare an investment&#8217;s present value with the investment cost and at the same time take inflation into account in its calculations. An investment is profitable if it turns out that the present value is greater than the investment cost.<\/p>\n<p>Account must also be taken of whether nominal or real interest rates are to be used in the economic analysis. Municipalities and authorities use different interest rates, for example, since 1994 the Swedish Transport Administration has used a fixed interest rate of 4%. However, recent recommendations have adjusted this recommendation for the real (inflation-free) socioeconomic discount rate to 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p>It is also important to determine whether any residual value of the product should be included in the calculations, however this is usually ignored. A further uncertain factor is the energy price that has spiked about 3% over inflation in recent years, but despite this, this trend is assumed to stop.<\/p>\n<h4>Life Cycle Cost Analysis<\/h4>\n<p>In order to decide which option is most economically advantageous for your particular association, we recommend an LCC analysis that takes into account the economic aspects described above and shows what the total costs will be over a longer period, up to 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>The LCC analysis provides concrete answers to questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much does the repair of individual apartments cost and how much does a joint replacement change cost?<\/li>\n<li>When will joint replacement for the entire association be cost-effective compared to individual repair of individual apartments?<\/li>\n<li>How much of the association&#8217;s apartments need repair?<\/li>\n<li>When is it cost-effective to choose &#8220;relining&#8221;
